Knee pain is a common health complaint, with dozens of possible etiologies.Some are potentially life threatening, while others are functionally debilitating and progressive.

Having a systematic approach to evaluating knee pain is crucial to ensure accurate and prompt diagnosis.

Here we present two algorithmic diagnostic approaches to the adult with knee pain, one for traumatic knee pain and the other for non-traumatic cases.

Three typical cases of knee pain are described to exemplify the use of the algorithms in a busy family medicine setting.
